For the turn of the year, TABLOO brings a bit of South Africa to Belgium with the artwork of Mariana Waso.

From an early age, Mariana found joy and solace in beauty – also in unexpected places – and felt the urge to create art. Painting became her means of giving meaning to life and bringing people together through shared appreciation of the wonders of nature.

The talented artist improved her skills and developed various techniques under the guidance of renowned South African artists such as Rina Badenhorst (oil painter specialized in portraits), Leon Fourie (artist with focus on old masters), Koos Bronkhorst (skilled acrylic painter) and Neil Moss (versatile artist in oil, watercolor and acrylic techniques).

The lush landscapes – from vast savannas to breathtaking views of the coast and the vibrant flora of the sun-soaked region where she grew up in South Africa – are reflected in her contemporary art. A new artistic chapter started with her move to Leuven in 2023, when she explored the more stunning landscapes, complex architecture, the masterpieces of old masters through historic art museums and the rich cultural heritage of Europe.

The contrast between the two continents, the fleeting beauty of nature with special attention to light, color, movement and texture in her landscapes and flower paintings create a visual experience with which Mariana wants to invite us to stop, listen and enjoy the moment ... before it slips away.
