For the new painting season TABLOO has invited a very particular artist from Ghent. He calls himself Mattman. Not because he is mad, but his art is really special. Mattman’s works of art are made on recycled material that he finds in the city. Not just in an attempt to clean the streets but also because he likes rough materials and the fact that there is a whole history behind them. He draws and paints on old windows, broken tabletops, cabinet doors, metal plates,… To give new live to things that had no value anymore.
His work mostly shows people. Mattman tries to learn something about self esteem and about the beauty of the human body. He doesn’t add much details because he prefers to leave some space for dreaming. What is it that makes people so special? Mattman tries to captivate this just in a few lines. The human figure is so different to draw than landscapes or animals, because people have a soul and emotions which are expressed even by the smallest muscle or posture.
